The Dawn – Prologue

It was a cold, brisk night out on the street. Everywhere people were partying, young lovers cuddling and a church charity group rattling their tins in people’s faces walking by.

 “There she is!” Andrew said.

They began running, ducking and swerving through the throng.

Their target, Lucy, the head of the BGA, saw them in that instant and knocked over someone from the church group to create a diversion, coins rolled and scattered across the pavement as she ducked around a corner into an alley.

“Where’d she go?” Mathew asked as they ran.

“Just around that corner” Andrew said pointing. As they went past the church group Mathew quickly threw them a ten dollar note, and he turned the corner and trapped Lucy in the one-way alley.

When he entered, there were rats scampering across the concrete from the massive garbage bin on one side and cardboard boxes strewn all across the ground.

“There’s nowhere to run! We’ve got you cornered!” Andrew said as he reached for his holster.

“Oh, no, what ever will I do,” Lucy said sarcastically, as she drew her weapon and a split second later, Andrew drew his.

“It’s two against one Lucy, there is no escape,” Mathew said

“Not for long,” she said as she pulled the trigger.

Mathew coughed and clutched his chest and fell to the ground.

She made a run for it, running past them and Andrew started shooting at her, and she screamed, clutching her hip and started limping.

Andrew ran quickly to Mathew and grabbed him in his arms.

“You’re going to get through this, be strong, I’m calling an ambulance” Andrew said as he got his phone out and called the medics trying not to lose it.

“I don’t think…” he said coughing and panting hard as blood was spurting out  “I’m going to survive this time,” he said with even more coughing this time “Make sure Nathan gets the best and please explain to him when he’s a little bit older how I died from Lucy and make sure…” He said as he passed out.

“Mathew!! Mathew!!” He shouted anxiously; Mathew woke up suddenly

“To teach him how to fight and please take care of my family, thank you brother, for everything” He said as his face went pale and his breathing stopped and there was just the sound of the people outside the alley.

“Goodbye old friend you will be sorely missed” Andrew said
