The Cave – Short Story

My group of friends and I are heading towards this lake where we go to canoe all the time. When we got there, we said goodbye to their parents.

“See you in a few hours” my mum said. I looked back, smiled and waved back at her.

We all signed our names and digressed into the hut where the staff were giving us a little briefing. Everyone stood up and separated into their groups. For us there was two groups: Me, May and Lee, and Tyson, Jordan and Hayley in the other group. We all hopped in the canoes, got the oars, pushed off from the shore and headed off. We were around three kilometres away from the starting point when we got hit by a massive storm which was stirring up the water and made this gigantic tidal wave come, and hit us. we blacked out.

We woke up in a cave and it was pitch black all around us, except for this little light that was shining from up above, through a little opening in the roof.  We heard some lightning from the storm raging outside. We looked back at where we entered but now it was blocked off by rocks.

“Well, it looks like there’s a terrible storm outside” I stated.

“How are we meant to escape?” Lee asked worryingly.

“My bag is soaking dude” Tyson expressed angrily, coming over to where Lee and I were. He put on the bag and it made a sludgy sound and it seeped through his shirt. He got his flashlight out and shined it, it still worked, he handed it over to me to use.

“We need to try and find any passages in the walls or anything that looks like an exit” I stated as all five of them nodded and started searching.

Lee was feeling a part of the wall when he came across a piece in the wall that looked odd, he started to dig at it, and it collapsed easily.

“Hey guys come have a look at this!” Lee yelled out, everyone came over “It looks like an entrance to a cavern” he explained, his voice echoing, throughout the rest of the cave.

He stepped on the side of the cavern and we followed, trying very careful not to fall.

“There’s a bridge over there!” Lee explained pointing, as he started walking towards it.

We made it to the beginning of the bridge, it looked like it was on its last legs, so we went one person at a time, just to be safe. We all made it across, and we went to a safe spot, with some open ground.

“Do we continue? Because it looks like this cave goes on forever” Lee explained

“There’s two ways, continue straight or continue down the ravine till we reach something” I explained, and Lee just looked at me with a face saying, you lead the way.

We went forward, all we could hear was the pitter patter of some water coming from the rocks, and our footsteps.  We all got to another little opening, we stopped suddenly at the entrance, because we heard something in there, it sounded like an animal. We went through the little opening and sure enough it was an animal, who was snoring really loudly.

We tiptoed passed it, as to not wake it up, and we managed to do that, and we went to where the cave continued. We got to another opening but this time it was filled with the different ores from what Tyson used to use. Tyson got the container from his bag, and his chisel, and started chiseling at the wall getting some of the pieces off the wall. He went over to where the yellowish gold sand was and put it in a separate part of the container and put a divider in the middle so that they would not touch. There was something dripping from the wall, it was the bluish white liquid he tapped the side and got his test tube out and he let it drip near the top of the test tube then he got a zip lock bag out and put it in there. He then spotted something new, a greenish lime looking ore and he chipped away at the wall and a few pieces fell off, and he collected them inside his beaker.

“You done?” I asked.

“Yes, I can’t wait to get out of this cave and start testing this new substance” Tyson explained excitedly.

We continued through the cave until we reached another opening. We saw light through this one, and we got excited, we climbed through into the opening, and sure enough our hopes came true. We all squeezed our way through the opening, the storm had calmed, and now it was only spitting. We all got out and realized that we were now on the other side of the mountain that we got trapped in. We all took a deep breath and scaled down to where the lake shore was and saw that there were police cars where we started, and our parents were all there as well. We were exhausted, we made it back, and were spotted by a police officer. She ran over to us and got her radio out.

“I found them, over” She said, then a few seconds later came a response.

“Great bring them here, over” The other officer said.

The officer signalled for us to follow her back. We made it back to the starting point, and our parents raced over to us and hugged us hard.

“I was so worried for you” My mum said, kissing me on the forehead.

“Now who’s hungry?” Lee’s dad asked us, we all cheered, and we got into our cars and headed to the nearest fast food chain.
